Our first stay in Brazil was a week in Rio, including New Year’s Eve!

We stayed near Copacabana beach in preparation for new years, and it was so much fun exploring the surrounding area and beaches! Our first full day in Rio was Em’s birthday and we spent the day on beautiful Ipanema beach! In the evening we went to a cocktail bar for birthday drinks.

We explored the Santa Teresa neighbourhood, known for its street art and historic tram line. We took the tram through the neighbourhood, with views of some of the art as well as views over Rio. We also visited the Selarón Steps which are decorated with mosaic patterns. We even found some Australia themed tiles!

Unfortunately for Jake, there were no soccer games on during our stay (there was a break between Christmas and New Year), however we still visited the famous Maracana stadium! It was interesting exploring the stadium and learning more about some famous players from Brazil.

We spent a morning exploring the botanical gardens of Rio which were beautiful! The gardens are huge, so despite spending several hours there we only made it to a small portion. After the gardens we went to Christ the Redeemer. We took the scenic train ride to the top and then wandered around the monument. There were so many people at the top it was a challenge to get photos, but it was an amazing experience to see in person!

Our favourite spot we visited in Rio was Sugarloaf Mountain. We took the cable car from the base, with amazing views over Rio and the many surrounding beaches. There were bars and restaurants at the top, as well as live music. We spent a few hours enjoying the views and were even able to enjoy a stunning sunset from the top.

We spent New Years Eve on Copacabana beach where an annual, free New Years celebration is held. There are stages for live music, lots of bars set up along the beach and of course fireworks at midnight! We met up with some other friends from our travels and set up a spot on the beach (near a beach bar of course!) to watch the fireworks. Despite the crowds (there were 2.6 million people in attendance!) it was such an amazing experience to ring in the New Year there.

From Rio we head to Sao Paolo (via a 6 hour bus on New Years Day!).
