Santiago & Valparaiso

After leaving Mendoza we crossed the border back into Chile to the capital, Santiago! We spent a few days exploring the city, followed by two days on the coast in the nearby port town of Valparaiso.

Cerro Santa Lucia in Santiago

We stayed in a central area of Santiago called Providencia, near the historic area. There were lots of beautiful parks, cafes and restaurants. One of the highlights was a walk up Santa Lucia hill in the middle of Santiago for amazing views of the city and the Andes. We also spent a morning exploring the National Museum of Fine Arts.

We took the funicular (like a large elevator up the side of the hill) and cable car up San Cristobal hill and to the Metropolitan park of Chile. This gave us even more impressive panoramic views of the city!

From Santiago we decided to spend two days on the coast in Valparaiso, a town around an hour from Santiago. We had beautiful sunny days in Valparaiso, perfect to wander the colourful streets and enjoy the ocean views! The highlight was a walking tour showcasing the local street art and several galleries featuring local artists. The street artists all have distinct styles, so it was interesting learning about them and later recognising their work on the street!

Sunset in Valparaiso

Our next stop is one we’re incredibly excited for, Patagonia! First up is a road trip through Carretera Austral in Chilean Patagonia.
