Our last stop in Bolivia was a three day tour of the Uyuni salt flats in the south of the country.

We travelled to the town of Uyuni by overnight bus before starting our tour of the salt flats and surrounds. On the first day of our tour we explored the train cemetery, where old steam trains that were previously used to transport salt were abandoned. After that we explored the salt flats, including lunch in an old salt hotel and taking lots of silly perspective photos on the salt flats! We visited the “island” of Incahuasi in the middle of the salt flats, one of the few sites with plant/animal life. We finished the day with sunset and wine before heading to our hotel for the night, built out of 90% salt.

On the second day of our tour we explored some lagoons around the salt flats which were beautiful. We saw a lot of flamingoes which was so exciting! The lagoons have very different (and very vivid) colours based on their different mineral composition and the presence of algae. We also visited the Sioli desert, with incredible views of the surrounding volcanoes.

On our last day we started very early to get to the geysers, hot springs with boiling water that erupt large amounts of steam. We also visited some other natural hot springs, and Laguna Verde or “green lagoon”.

At the end of our tour we crossed the border into Chile, to the town of San Pedro de Atacama in the Atacama Desert!
