Amazon

Our last stop in Ecuador was four days in Cuyabeno, a nature reserve in the Ecuadorian Amazon.

The view from one of our boat trips through the Amazon!

After a very, very long journey to Cuyabeno from Quito (we left Quito at 8.30pm and didn’t arrive until 2pm the next day!) we arrived at the beautiful Bamboo Lodge! The lodge is only accessible by a two hour canoe ride from the nearest road access.

We spent the next four days exploring the Amazon Rainforest with our local guide, Luis, and a couple of other guests! The views from our boat rides were stunning, and we saw so much wildlife (monkeys, pink river dolphins, giant river otters, and lots of snakes!).

On our second day we visited a local indigenous community, the Siona community. We were taught to make Yuca bread from scratch, including harvesting the roots!

Helping to make the yuca bread!

We also explored the rainforest by night, both on foot and by canoe. We saw a couple of caiman (similar to crocodiles), plus even more snakes and spiders!

We went on both a sunset and sunrise boat ride along the river, including a sunset swim! Thankfully no run ins with piranhas!

Sunset swim!

Ecuador is going to be a hard country to beat after all the amazing things we’ve done here, but we’re excited for Peru next!

Turning into our “driveway” to the lodge
